LG OLED G2 65” TV – Impressive Yet Troubled Experience

The LG OLED G2 65” TV promises to be a cutting-edge display, combining the high-end performance of OLED technology with sleek design features. I was excited to pair it with my PlayStation 5, expecting an incredible viewing and gaming experience. While the TV indeed has some standout qualities, my experience was marred by technical issues that ultimately left me disappointed.

The Good

When this TV works properly, it’s fantastic. The OLED display offers stunning picture quality, with bright and vibrant colors. The contrast is exceptional, producing deep blacks and sharp, bright whites, which makes watching movies and playing video games an absolute pleasure. The vivid color vibrancy and overall clarity are what you’d expect from a top-tier TV. Additionally, the TV’s slim profile is a major plus – it’s so thin that it barely takes up any space, making it ideal for minimalistic setups.

Though I never wall-mounted the LG OLED G2, it sat beautifully on a stand. Its design is impressive, and it’s clear that LG has put thought into how this TV will look in various settings.

The Issues

However, my excitement was short-lived. Right from the start, I began experiencing several issues that severely impacted the performance of the TV.

1. HDR Resetting Issue: The first major issue I encountered was with the HDR setting, which kept resetting itself. This caused the picture to flicker and go black temporarily, with the “HDR” notification popping up in the corner of the screen before the image resumed. This disruption happened frequently—about every minute—and made watching anything frustrating.

2. Persistent Black and White Lines: As if the HDR issue wasn’t enough, a more serious problem surfaced—a black pixel-wide line ran vertically from the top to the bottom of the screen. While turning the TV off for a day seemed to help temporarily, the line would return once the TV warmed up. On worse days, two black lines and a thick white line would appear, completely ruining the viewing experience.

3. Standby Mode Problems: Eventually, the TV began going into standby mode about an hour after the lines appeared. Once again, letting the TV “rest” seemed to resolve the problem for a while, but the issue always returned after some use. This pattern led me to believe there was a cooling problem.

The Repair Process

As a long-time LG customer, I reached out for service, hoping the issues could be fixed. However, LG’s service process was tricky. When the repair technician came out, the TV had been off for a few days, so none of the issues presented themselves during his visit. Despite the photos and videos I provided to LG, the technician could not take further action since the problem didn’t appear while he was on-site.

Fortunately, the technician was helpful and advised me on how to deal with LG’s repair policies. I’d bought an extended warranty through Asurion, so I eventually opened another service request when the standby mode issue worsened. After months of back-and-forth, I finally had the TV picked up for repair. In the end, Asurion mailed me a check for the price of the TV (minus taxes), which, while helpful, was a bit of a letdown.

Final Thoughts

Overall, I wouldn’t let my experience completely deter others from purchasing the LG OLED G2 65” TV. The picture quality, color vibrancy, and design make it a standout when it’s functioning correctly. It’s possible that my unit was simply faulty. However, the technical issues I experienced and the challenges in getting the TV repaired have left a bitter taste in my mouth.

As for me, I won’t be buying this particular model again, but I’ll be keeping an eye on the next TV—perhaps going even bigger this time! Stay tuned for the next chapter in my TV saga.
